Here are a few photos of our new camp location... more to come. Move, Think, Create and Communicate Summer Camp.It's that time of the year again... Time to register for The Move, Think, Create and Communicate Summer Camp. A week long summer camp program for children with Autism, Asperger Syndrome or related Communication Disorder. Camp runs at the Boy Scouts of America Buck Hill Scout Reservation, a wooded rustic campsite complete with a lake, themed buildings and areas (Ships, Old West, and Castle) and a swimming pool. *Session 1 August 6th -- 10th *Session 2 August 13th -- 17th Camp is moving to a new location in Pascoag, RI... but We are now offering transportation to camp! We just received a grant and all passengers will receive a subsidized rate of only $25! Scholarships are available for those in financial need! Campers will be dropped off at our office in Johnston and at a location in North Kingstown. We will possibly have an East Bay drop off location if needed. Our staff will accompany campers on the bus to camp and then back to the drop off point. Commencement 2012 Undergraduate Speaker: Joy Ann Fraychineaud
Joy Ann Fraychineaud, our undergraduate student speaker, is from Harvey, Louisiana, on the west bank of the Mississippi River near New Orleans. She graduated from the Louisiana School for the Deaf in 2008, and entered Gallaudet University the following fall. During her freshman year, she was named a Fantastic First Year Student. A physical education major, Joy has been on the Dean's List every semester, and is graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude. She has received several awards for academic excellence and leadership, including the Dorothy Hamberg Memorial Leadership Award, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Major of the Year Award, and the Phi Kappa Zeta Sorority Catherine Bronson Higgins Memorial Scholarship. Joy was inducted into the Phi Alpha Pi Honor Society during her junior year. Joy worked as a Peer Health Advocate. She has been a physical education student teacher assistant at both Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD). Joy currently serves as an assistant coach for MSSD's track and field team. She has been involved with many volunteer and service activities, including tutoring, the Academic Bowl; Get Moving, Gallaudet!; the Howard County, Maryland youth basketball program; Camp Mark 7's Senior Citizen Week, and the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School after-school program. Rose Pak, lost her father to a communist take over in China. As child, with mom and 2 sisters, moved to colonial Hong Kong where relentless study won all three siblings scholarships to universities. Choosing an American university, upon graduation, Rose becomes the first Asian woman to work for the SF Chronicle as a reporter. Today, she visits with the SF African American Democratic Club to think global and act local in finding common ground that may form beneficial strategic alliances. Expresses gratitude for trail blazing efforts of African Americans who opened the pathways to opportunities and inspired the progress of many communities. Urges respect for wisdom of elders and not to forget to care for elders while moving forward. Encourages leadership training from ground up. Speaks of criterion and standards by which to operate and suggest the importance of the need to know that groomed leaders are passionate about fixing issues which plague the community. Reminds community to hold leaders responsible to prove worthy of support and vote.
