Tiverton Weightlifting Club's Inman Mile Challege at Westexe Recreational Ground
FUNDRAISERS from Tiverton Weightlifting Club faced a heavy challenge in Westexe Rec this Sunday when they attempted the Inman Challenge. The challenge is a test of strength in which weightlifters are tasked with carrying 150% of their own bodyweight on their shoulders for one mile. Although the Inman Mile has never actually been completed, the current record stands at just over 225 metres. First up in the running was 41 year old Gary Ell, who wasn't raising money for charity, but wanted to have a go at carrying the 135 kilograms. Following Gary's 84.2 metres Thomas Cleverly took on the challenge in aid of Help for Heroes and had to carry 120 kilograms. After two minutes and 152.2 meters the 21 year old could no longer carry the weight. 23 year old Axel Amos was next up and was also raising money for the Help for Heroes charity and was carrying 127.5 kilos Two minutes and six seconds in his challenge came to end leaving him disappointed with his distance of 161.5 meters. Finally, 49 year old Mark Rattenberry who has been practicing for this event for several months took the weights. Mark is was raising money for the Sunningmead Community Centre windows appeal where the Weightlifting Club is Based and is also a trustee and on the management committee of the centre. Mark -- the lightest member of the four -- would have to carry a weight of 97.5 kilograms. With the record smashed at 503 meters and after getting his breath back, Mark said he was delighted with the result <b>...</b>
